Upper Dolpo Shey Gompa Trekking 28 Days

Trip Overview

Dolpo is the most remote and least developed but the largest district in Nepal. Dolpo, surrounded by high mountain ranges, remains one of the few forbidden border regions of Nepal. The last vestiges of traditional Tibetan culture can be found in this visually stunning region of high plateaus and striking landscapes made famous in the Peter Matthiessen’s meditative book ‘The Snow Leopard’ and Eric Valli’s stunning movie ‘Himalaya (Caravan)’. The region was only opened to foreigners in 1989, and receives a fraction of the visitors thronging other parts of Nepal. Here remain some of the highest settlements on earth where the villagers grow their crops of barley and herd their yaks. This trek will appeal to those seasoned travelers in search of an authentic Himalayan experience.

Dolpo trekking presents an exposure to the high   remote Himalayan valleys, resembling the Tibetan highlands. The main highlight of Dolpa trekking includes "Shey Phoksundo National Park" which is totally free of aquatic life, which the crystal waters clearly explain. Surrounded by rocks, forests, and snow-capped peaks, the area has been described as one of the World's "Natural Hidden Wonders". The other notable figures seen in Dolpo trek are snowy peaks, ancient and remote villages, rich wildlife such as Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep and the legendary elusive Snow Leopard, lovely Buddhist monasteries and wonderful lakes. Shey Phoksundo Lake is at the central highlights of the ‘Shey Phoksundo National Park’ in the Dolpo region. The surreal sight of the lake, which hosts no aquatic life and appears to fluctuate between a turquoise and ultramarine hue – appears to substantiate the legend. If you follow in the footsteps of generations of nomads, look out for the remains of the ill-fated village below the lake’s surface. The Dolpo region is hard to match for its pristine beauty and extreme charm, where one can still have opportunity to meet the nomadic people and their life style almost untouched and unexplored. The Himalayas offer an endless variety of landscapes, cultures and great people. The people of Dolpo area are simple and warm-hearted with enthralling culture and traditions. The cultural traditions of Dolpo are basically linked with Tibetan. This unbounded diversity makes it a destination you can visit over and over again. It even becomes more interesting and fascinating with every time you return.

This trek begins from "Juphal" and follows the track to "Dunai", then continues to "Tarakot", way up to "Bang la" Camp, the uppermost point of Dolpo trekking, after passing through the "Sanu Bheri" village, you then descend to the good-looking "Phoksundo" Lake, which is a piece of the "Shey Phoksundo National Park". At Ringmo, the highlight of our trip we will have two nights here to enjoy the beauty of the deep blue waters of the Phoksundo lake and the surrounding snow peaks of Kanjirowa Himalayan range, with time to visit the nearby isolated village of Ringmo and its Monastery. Our classic journey continues to the amazing country of Crystal Mountain at Shey Gomba, following the ancient Trans Himalayan Trade route and back to Jhuphal for the flight back by an alternative route, giving you more opportunity to explore this fascinating wild west of Nepal Himalaya.
